David de Gea, Replacement for Vandersaar?

Saturday, May 7, 2011

Premier League giants Manchester United will lose their first choice number one Edwin van Der Sar this summer.

The veteran Dutchman has decided to call time on his career at the age of 40. He will be really hard to replace.

Linked

Manchester United have been linked with a number of keepers in recent months but the one who has been most heavily linked with the Red Devils is Atletico Madrid stopper David De Gea.

There was even talk of a summer move already being agreed.

However the youngster has came out and denied that a summer move has already been arranged. The 20 year-old told a press conference:

“There is nothing, it is all lies, I know nothing about offers from any team, whether it is other clubs or a renewal from Atletico.”

Quality

De Gea has come to prominence in the last 18 months after breaking into the Atletico Madrid first team and becoming their first choice keeper. His keeping skills definitely belie his age. His performances have brought comparisons with the veteran Van Der Sar, not just for his ability but for his stature as well.

He is a commanding keeper with good shot stopping abilities. He has almost all the qualities required to be a world-class keeper. The only thing that he is slightly lacking in at the moment is experience but he will only gain that with first team football.

The Italian however doesn’t seem to be worried about leaving the Blues. He told Sky Sports: “I don’t know what my future is,”

“At the end of the season, I think the club can decide if they want me to continue or if they want to change. If they are not happy, they can change without problem. If, at the end of the season, the owner decides my job was not good enough, this is not a problem.

“I will try to do my best, because I want to stay here. If there is a possibility to do that, I will be happy.”

Ancelotti is a top boss but his team have struggled this season for a variety of reasons. The Italian won’t be worried because if he does get fired by the Blues he will have a host of clubs chasing his signature for next season and he will also receive a massive compensation package.

Ronaldinho appears to have rejected a move to Blackburn Rovers and remains on course to rejoin Brazilian club Gremio.

The former Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona forward is due to bring an end to his three-year spell with Serie A side AC Milan following the arrival of Antonio Cassano from Sampdoria.

Ronaldinho has been widely expected to return to Gremio, the club where he began his professional career in 1998.

English Premier League club Blackburn emerged as an unlikely bidder this week, but any hopes they had of securing the former world player of the year appear to be receding fast following comments by Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri on Wednesday.

“We are all sorry to lose a player of the quality of Ronaldinho,” Allegri said.

“But he has made a life choice by going to Brazil.”

The 30-year-old 2002 World Cup winner is expected to sign a three-and-a-half-year deal with Gremio, who finished fourth in last season’s Brazilian championship.

“I still have three years on my contract but it’s not me who decides if I’m playing. But if I’m not playing and I’m not injured, I have no reason to be here.

“I’m 26 and feel I can play regularly at this level at this club. So if I’m not going to play and be on the bench for a while, obviously I’m not interested in being here. Then I must see what options I have.”

“I have the attitude that if anyone wants to get rid of me and they are doing something on my behalf, I really expect that you’d walk up and say it to my face.”
